perfect female smile

Do you have a tooth that has been cracked, chipped, or severely worn? If you have a tooth that is damaged, Dr. Lee at Desert Dental Family will most likely recommend one of two restorative dentistry treatments, such as a dental filling or crown.

Fillings are typically used to restore a tooth with mild to moderate tooth decay that affects less than 50% of the tooth. Crowns are made from porcelain and used to repair a tooth that is broken, cracked, or severely damaged from decay. When paired with dental implants, they can also be used to replace a missing tooth.

To learn more about the type of restorative and cosmetic dentistry treatments we provide, call our Mesa, AZ, dental office at (480) 568-2353 and schedule your consultation with Dr. Lee.

What is a White Crown?

Also known as a “cap,” this type of restoration is typically made from porcelain and designed in a high quality lab to cover a tooth and restore it back to its natural function. It is also beneficial for patients looking for a solution to naturally blend with their smile since it most closely resembles the look of a tooth in size, shape, color, and texture.

The primary benefits include:

  • Strength and durability
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Looks and functions like a natural tooth
  • Long-lasting results

For your custom restoration to be created, Dr. Lee will take an impression of your smile to be sent to the lab. While it’s being created, we will provide you with a temporary restoration. It can also be paired with a dental bridge or dental implant to replace one or more missing teeth.

When is it Recommended?

Dental crowns provide both cosmetic and restorative benefits for patients. Your customized restoration will naturally blend with your remaining teeth, as well as reinforce the natural structure of the tooth. In order to qualify, you must have healthy gums, without any signs of gum disease.

Dr. Lee may recommend this type of restoration if you have:

  • A tooth that is cracked or chipped
  • A tooth that is broken down to the root
  • A tooth with a severe cavity
  • A tooth that requires root canal therapy
  • A tooth with severe discoloration that has not responded well to teeth whitening
  • One or more teeth weakened or worn from bruxism
  • A tooth that is missing and requires a dental implant
  • One or more teeth that are misshapen or too small

What to Expect During Your Consultation

When you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Lee will perform a thorough cleaning and exam with x-rays to determine the extent of your dental damage. He will present all of the available options and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the severity of damage, your treatment may include: removal of tooth decay, root canal therapy, dental implant preparation and placement, or if necessary, tooth extraction.

Once the treatment plan has been decided, he will use gentle techniques to carefully prepare your mouth for the restoration. He will then take an impression of your mouth to be sent to our high quality lab for your customized restoration to be designed. While it’s being created, he will provide you with a temporary.

During your follow-up appointment, Dr. Lee will permanently attach the restoration with white composite resin. In most cases, your treatment will take two to three appointments.
